Quid Pro Quiz

Put it on the bar's TV

Teams answer on their phones. The TV shows the question, the countdown and the scores. Here's how to get it up there, whatever the TV is.

Fastest: if the TV has a web browser, open goquiz.pro/display on it and type the four-letter room code from your host screen. That's it.

The display page needs no sign-in and shows nothing but the game. Keep this phone handy: the code is on your host screen's lobby.

On the Venue or Company plan: open goquiz.pro/screen instead and link the TV to your venue once. After that it finds each week's game on its own and loops your welcome, house cards and next night in between, with no code to type. See Link the TV to your venue.

Fire TV (Silk browser)

  1. On the Fire TV home screen, open Silk Browser. If it isn't installed, find it in the Appstore (it's free).
  2. Select the address bar and enter goquiz.pro/display (or goquiz.pro/screen for a TV linked to your venue, below).
  3. Type the room code from your host screen and choose Show the game.
  4. Press the menu button on the remote and choose Full screen so the page fills the TV.

If the picture dims or the screen saver comes on during a long round, press any button on the remote; it comes straight back. For a TV that will show trivia every week, a linked screen (goquiz.pro/screen) asks the browser to keep the screen awake, and the Android TV app below stays awake on its own. There's no Quid Pro Quiz app in Amazon's Appstore; Fire TVs use Silk.

Samsung TV (Internet app)

  1. Press Home on the remote and open Internet (Samsung's browser).
  2. Select the address bar and enter goquiz.pro/display.
  3. Type the room code and choose Show the game.
  4. Choose the full screen option in the browser's toolbar, if it offers one, so the bar at the top goes away.

LG TV (Web Browser)

  1. Press Home on the remote and open Web Browser.
  2. Select the address bar and enter goquiz.pro/display.
  3. Type the room code and choose Show the game.
  4. Use the browser's full-screen option, if it offers one, so the page fills the TV.

Apple TV and Android TV appsFree

Quid Pro Quiz has a free app for Apple TV and for Android TV (Google TV and other Android TVs with Google Play). Install it from the TV's app store, open it and type the room code. The app keeps the screen on all game, plays the TV sounds, and shows pictures and clips.

Bars on the Venue and Company plans can link their TVs to the venue, so the TVs find each week's game on their own and loop the bar's own content in between. Fire TV has no app: link it through Silk, below.

Link the TV to your venueVenue and Company

A linked TV needs no code each week. When you open the venue's online room it shows the game; when no game is on it loops your welcome, house cards, league standings and next night. It does the same on an Apple TV, an Android TV, or any TV browser at goquiz.pro/screen.

  1. On the TV, open the Quid Pro Quiz app and choose Link to a venue, or open goquiz.pro/screen in the TV's browser (Fire TV: Silk, full screen as above). It shows a six-character code and a QR code.
  2. On your iPad, iPhone or Mac, go to Settings → Venue → Screens → Link a screen and enter the code, or point the phone's camera at the QR code. Name the TV ("Bar left") and say whether it plays the sound. The same controls are at goquiz.pro/account from any laptop.
  3. The TV shows its name for a moment and gets on with it. From then on, Screens in the app (and the Screens row during a game) lets you send a TV to the idle loop, show a house card or a message, turn it off, or bring it back to the game. Co-hosts get those controls too.

A browser TV comes back linked after a reload or a power cut as long as the browser keeps its site data; if it shows a code again, link it again. Set the TV's sleep timer to never for a TV that shows your content all week. On a TV browser, the only control on the page is a Settings button that any press on the remote brings up, with Unlink this TV.

AirPlay from an iPad or iPhone

  1. Put the TV (an Apple TV, or an AirPlay-capable TV) on the same Wi-Fi as the iPad or iPhone you host from.
  2. On the host device, open Control Center, tap Screen Mirroring and choose the TV.
  3. Open the lobby in Quid Pro Quiz. The TV shows the game's TV view, not your host screen, so the answer key never goes on the wall.

Bar Wi-Fi sometimes keeps devices from seeing each other. If the TV doesn't appear under Screen Mirroring, an HDMI cable or the display page is the sure thing.

HDMI cable from the host device

  1. Connect the TV to the iPad, iPhone or Mac with a USB-C to HDMI adapter or cable (a Lightning iPad or iPhone needs the Lightning Digital AV Adapter).
  2. Switch the TV to that HDMI input.
  3. Open the lobby in Quid Pro Quiz. The TV gets the game's TV view; your host screen stays on the device. On a Mac, open the TV Display window and move it to the TV, full screen.

If something's off

The TV shows "No game with that code"

Check the four letters on your host screen. Codes never have vowels, so a code like PLUM can't be one. The room only exists while the lobby is open.

The question is cut off, or the text is small

Turn on the browser's full-screen mode (the steps above), and check the TV's picture size isn't set to zoom or overscan: look for "Just scan", "Fit to screen" or "16:9 standard" in the TV's picture settings.

No sound, or a clip doesn't play

Some TV browsers won't play sound until someone has pressed a button on the page. Select the page once with the remote after it opens. The Apple TV and Android TV apps play sound without that.

The TV went to sleep or the screen saver came on

Turn off the TV's sleep timer and screen saver for the night in its settings, or use the Apple TV or Android TV app, which keeps the screen awake while a game is on. A linked screen at goquiz.pro/screen asks the browser to keep the screen awake too, where the browser allows it.

A linked TV shows the game but not the bar's own slides, colors or message

The venue's Venue or Company plan has ended, so the TV shows the plain Quid Pro Quiz look and ignores the controls. Renew the plan in the app on the owner's iPad or Mac; the TVs pick it up on their own.

A linked TV shows "Link this TV" again

It was unlinked from the app, or the browser lost its site data (a reset, or storage cleared). Link it again from Settings → Venue → Screens with the new code it shows; the old entry in your list says "Last seen …" and can be unlinked.
